The Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit (Long Lake)!!
The Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit consists of 30,000 acres of rolling hills, lakes, forests and grasslands, and is internationally known for its unique glacial features. Within the forest are two main recreation areas, Long Lake and Mauthe Lake. Both areas offer camping, swimming, fishing and picnicking.
There are more than 130 miles of trails throughout the forest, which are used for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and backpacking. The forest includes 31 miles of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail with shelters for overnight camping. There is also a horse camp for folks who want to camp with their horses after a long day’s ride. For the less adventuresome, there is the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive that traverses the length of the forest.
A great start to exploring the forest is the Henry S. Reuss Ice Age Visitor Center (located off of Hwy 67, ½ mile west of Dundee). The center has displays and a movie to acquaint visitors with the forces of the mighty glaciers. The naturalist staff can help you prepare for your visit to the forest and provide a wide array of educational and entertaining programs throughout the year.
